Our view of the service
Date of Inspection: 12 to 24 September 2025. Medwyn Surgery is a GP practice and delivers services to 14,200 patients under a contract held with NHS England. Information published by Office for Health Improvement and Disparities shows that deprivation within the practice population group is in the 9 decile (9 of 10). The lower the decile, the more deprived the practice population is relative to others. This inspection considered the demographics of the people using the practice, the context the practice was working within and how this impacted service delivery. Medwyn Surgery is an accredited training practice providing work placements to undergraduate medical students and GP registrars. The provider is registered with CQC to deliver the Regulated Activities; diagnostic and screening procedures, maternity and midwifery services; family planning, treatment of disease, disorder or injury and surgical procedures.
Patients were fully involved in assessments of their needs, decisions about their care including understanding options around choosing to withdraw or not receive care and care was based on latest evidence and good practice. Patients were treated with utmost kindness and compassion. The practice provided information in an accessible way so people could understand. Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable, and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. Staff understood their roles and responsibilities. The practice supported staff’s wellbeing. There was a well embedded culture of continuous improvement with staff given time and resources to try innovative ideas.
The practice has remained being rated Outstanding overall and in the key questions of caring, responsive and well-led. The safe and effective key questions have been rated as Good.
People's experience of this service
Patients were positive about the quality of their care and treatment. Test survey results, including from the National GP patient survey and the NHS Friends and Family Test, showed patients were very satisfied with services. For example, the GP patient survey 2025 results were all significantly above the national average including for overall experience and access. 90%describe their overall experience of this GP practice as good or very good. Compared to the national result of 75%.
CQC received 601 comments from patients and 587 of these were positive comments regarding the practice, with staff members mentioned and the care that they thought went above and beyond. Less positive comments were mainly about not having continuity of care with the same GP.
There was an active patient participation group, (PPG) who represented the views of people using the service. Representatives from the PPG described the relationship with the practice as being positive and told us how they helped co-design the Patient Partnership Agreement.
