Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

The provider treated people with kindness, compassion and dignity. We saw staff interacting with people in a kind, respectful manner and they knew people well. People and their relatives consistently described staff as caring and supportive. A relative told us, “The staff are brilliant with [Name]”. We saw continence products visible in some bedrooms and asked the provider to consider storage options to maintain people’s privacy and dignity. The manager was responsive to our feedback and ordered additional storage for each room after our visit.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. The provider treated people as individuals and staff understood people’s preferences. Care plans contained information about people’s life histories, likes and preferences. They were supported to maintain interests and relationships that were important to them. Relatives consistently told us staff knew their family members well and supported them in a personalised way. A relative said, “[Name] is treated as a character and most definitely as an individual”.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. The provider supported people to maintain their independence and have choice and control over their daily lives. We saw people being offered choices throughout the day, including meal choices and where they wished to sit for lunch. Relatives described staff supporting people to remain independent wherever possible. A relative told us, “Staff will walk behind [Name] when they want to go to the bathroom rather than leading them”.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. The provider responded to people’s immediate needs in a timely way. During the assessment, concerns identified by inspectors, including a bedroom door that would not close properly, were addressed immediately. Staff knew people well and demonstrated an understanding of how people communicated when they required support. We saw people asking for assistance and being supported timeously. Relatives told us staff responded promptly when assistance was required, with one relative stating, “They’ve responded very quickly, within two minutes, when I've been there”.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. The provider supported staff wellbeing and enabled them to raise concerns and seek support. Staff told us they felt listened to when concerns were raised and that action was taken in response. Staff described positive relationships within the team and inspectors observed staff being friendly, polite and supportive during the assessment. A staff member told us, “Communication is good”.
