Our view of the service

Date of assessment 6 January 2026 to 15 January 2026. Sutton Lodge is a ‘care home’ providing personal care and support to older people and people living with dementia. At the time of the assessment, the service was supporting 27 people with their personal care needs. This was a comprehensive assessment. During this assessment, we identified breaches in relation to safe care and treatment, and good governance.

Staffing levels were not always sufficient to meet people’s care and support needs, leaving some people at risk of harm. Safety risks were not consistently managed or assessed, and people did not always receive care as assessed, including repositioning, support with fluid intake, and falls prevention. The provider did not have effective processes for safeguarding; not all incidents were reported to the local authority as required. Systems were ineffective in reviewing incidents or preventing recurrence of incidents, and lessons were not consistently learned from safety events. Medicines were not managed safely to ensure people received them as prescribed. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 was not always followed. Care was task-focused rather than person-centred, and governance processes were ineffective. However, the building was maintained to ensure it was safe, and the home was clean and tidy. People had access to health appointments such as eye checks and GP appointments.

In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and /or appeals have been concluded.

People's experience of this service

This assessment found people did not always experience safe care. All the people living at Sutton Lodge were living with dementia, so we obtained feedback from relatives.

Whilst we found concerns, relatives told us their family members were safe. One relative told us, “My relative is safe here but wasn’t when at home.” Most relatives told us there was not enough staff, one relative told us “They are short staffed. They [staff] are very patient but are rushed off their feet.” Another relative told us, “To make things better they need to improve the staffing levels.” Relatives were not aware who the manager was, one relative told us, “I don’t know who the manager is they change a lot.” We were told staff were kind, caring and knew people well. One relative told us, “They are kind and caring; [family member] came here on [date], and the carer wrapped her up to keep warm.” Another relative told us, “The best thing is their [staff] genuine caring attitude.”
