Our view of the service

Overall, medicines were safely managed, and we did not find any medication errors. However, we continued to find areas where records required additional information and the provider’s own medication audits had not been effective in driving these improvements. People told us they felt safe. We found risks to people’s care were assessed but we found examples where best practice guidance around supporting people at risk of developing pressure ulcers was not always followed. Other risks were well managed. We also found examples where care plans required additional information.

The provider had a good learning culture and people felt able to raise concerns. Managers investigated incidents thoroughly. The facilities and equipment met people’s needs, and were clean and well-maintained. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications, and experience. However, staff told us they felt staffing levels were low. In our review of documentation, we found staffing levels were determined by an assessment of people’s needs, and the manager completed observations of care to confirm these were appropriate.

Managers ensured staff received training and regular supervision to maintain high-quality care. However, we also found examples where the registered manager had supported staff with issues they had raised, but this was not documented. Staff told us they felt well supported and described a positive working environment. Staff treated people with respect and had developed caring relationships with them.

People's experience of this service

We spoke with 4 people using the service and 3 relatives about their experience of the care provided. We observed care in the communal areas to help us understand the experience of people living at the home. We used the Short Observational Framework for Assessment (SOFI). SOFI is a way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who cannot talk with us.

People spoke about staff positively. Relatives told us their loved ones received safe and compassionate care. A person told us, “I do feel safe.” A relative said, “They are excellent, staff are first class, the care they give [relative] is good.”

In our observations of care, we found people were comfortable around staff. People were included and listened to, and staff consistently interacted positively with them. Staff adapted their communication and approach depending on people’s emotional needs and appropriate support was offered.
