Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People were actively involved in decision making and were able to enjoy things that mattered the most to them to enhance their overall well-being. A wide range of activities were continually facilitated in line with people’s preferences. For example, during the assessment 2 people had gone on holiday together with staff. They had been involved in the planning and chose what activities they wanted to do on holiday. In addition, 1 person was being supported to go to a concert, and another person was enjoying regular visits to the park. People were also supported to participate in voluntary work in the community if they wished to. One staff member told us, “The biggest thing is making sure [people] get to do what they want.”

People were supported to maintain their independence and do things that they were able to do for themselves. People’s individuality was respected and the provider ensured people had choices and control over their own experiences at the service. One initiative in place was inclusive recruitment. This involved 1 person participating in interviews for a staff member who would be part of their core support team. The manager told us the person really welcomed the new staff member when they started work as they had been involved in the process and decision making.
