Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 1 to 12 December 2025. Edgecumbe Lodge Care Home is registered to provide accommodation and personal care to older people, some of whom are living with dementia. The service provides care and support to up to 21 people. At the time of the assessment there were 19 people using the service. At our last assessment, published February 2025, the service was rated requires improvement. The provider was in breach of the legal regulation in relation to good governance. We carried out this assessment to review actions taken by the provider following our last assessment. We assessed all the quality statements in the safe and well led key questions. The provider was in breach of the legal regulation relating to notification of other incidents, because incidents were not always notified to CQC as required. In relation to good governance, we did not identify sufficient improvement, and the provider remained in breach of this regulation. Although some improvements had been made since the last assessment, other shortfalls identified meant the overall rating for the service remained requires improvement. People’s medicines were managed safely; however, risks to people were not always sufficiently assessed. There were enough staff available to meet people’s needs, and the provider took steps to manage the risk of infection. Staff knew people well, spoke positively about their roles and felt supported by the provider. Our observations of the care provided were positive, and people and their relatives told us they were satisfied with the service. However, governance systems were not always effective in monitoring and improving the quality of the service, in relation to incident management, staff training and risk assessments. The provider responded positively to the shortfalls identified. We asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
People's experience of this service
We spoke with 11 people who used the service and 6 relatives about their experience of the care provided. Some people were unable to share their experiences directly, so we spent time observing interactions with staff. To support this, we used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI), a structured observation tool which helps us understand people’s experiences and assess whether they receive good care. We observed a supportive environment where people were encouraged to maintain their independence. There were positive interactions between staff and people using the service. People were supported by a well-established team, who knew them well. Staff were kind and caring. Overall, people and relatives told us they were satisfied with the service. A person said, “I like it here, they look after me.” A relative commented, “Day to day, they do things well, communicate etc. and the staff have a lovely rapport with [person] and me.”
