Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 13 November to 28 November 2025. The service is a residential care home providing support and nursing care to adults of all ages with neurological conditions including acquired brain injury. The home is registered for 39 people. At the time of our inspection there were 33 people living at the home.

The inspection was prompted by intelligence received by CQC about the risk of caring and support for people living at Sherborne Court Neurological Centre.

Some areas of the home were not safely maintained, including access to shared bathrooms. However, once identified, the provider acted to keep people safe from avoidable harm.

Care plans were appropriately tailored to individuals’ preferences and needs; however, some care records required more information to accurately document people’s engagement in decisions regarding their care.

All required health and safety checks were completed, and ongoing refurbishment plans for the building were in place. However, there were some concerns with the management of infection prevention and control (IPC).

There were sufficient staff deployed, who received the training and support they needed to carry out their roles effectively. Staff were observed to be kind, respectful, and attentive, with positive relationships evident between them and the people they supported.

Staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening and learning. The management team were visible; however, some staff did not feel they could raise concerns about the work environment and be listened to as they felt their job security would be compromised. Staff understood their roles and responsibilities.

Governance systems were in place but needed to be more robust in identifying risks to people. Audits needed analysing to identify any themes and trends to help support people

People and relatives knew how to give feedback and were confident the provider took it seriously and acted on it.

People's experience of this service

People spoke positively about their experiences at the service. They described feeling safe, well cared for and supported by staff who were kind and attentive. One person told us, “I’m in the best place here, I couldn’t ask for better staff.”

Some people were involved in the development of their individual care and support plans and felt encouraged by staff to explore new opportunities and experiences. Most people felt they were supported by staff who had the right skills to effectively meet their needs and goals, however, some people felt that certain staff required additional support and training to identify potential issues before they arose. Relatives were positive about the staff supporting their family members.

People and relatives felt able to raise any concerns openly and were confident action would be taken and, if needed, improvements would be made. People knew staff and the management team well.

People appreciated the range of activities and outings available. One person shared, “We go out shopping with the staff and to places like Chester Zoo.”

People told us the food was good. A person said, “The food is good here, you get a choice. I enjoy everything they give me.”

While most feedback was positive, one person told us they were not happy living at Sherborne Court. The management team were already aware and were working towards supporting the individual.

While people expressed general satisfaction with their care and treatment, our assessment found elements of care did not meet the expected standards.
