Caring

Good

Updated 12 March 2024

People were at the centre of their care and support. We saw that staff respected people and their own private space. We observed staff knock on bedroom doors and ask if they could enter, waited for a response and then enter following an invitation. They then introduced themselves and informed the person what they wanted to discuss or do. Support plans included how people communicate and how they express their feelings.

This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

There was no blanket approach applied so that people are afforded choice and control over their care. Each care plan is personalised in every aspect from activities to personal care and people and their relatives are involved at all times. People had specific communication care plans for staff to follow. This ensured people could communicate their wishes as well as possible.

People were supported to have real choice and control. One person told us, “I chose everything in my room, I love it”. People were able to engage with their hobbies. One person loved arts and craft. They said, “We do arts and craft on a Thursday. I love it”. This person enjoyed showing us some of her work. Independence was important for people. People who needed support to eat and drink had specific equipment to help them to be as independent as they can be. People had control of their day to day activities and staff were always on hand to assist. For example, people liked to go out for walks during different parts of the day and they were free and able to with support from staff.

Staff told us that Lulworth provides all the necessary, individualised training to enable us to play a pivotal role in helping people be independent as possible and have the most control over their care. On staff member said, “We are trained on administering epilepsy medication, so we can take people out if they wish knowing that if they need any intervention, we are able to deliver this.” This ensured people could have choice and control over their activities regardless of their health needs.
