Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The service treated people with kindness, empathy, compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. One person said, “I like the staff” and another person said they were “Alright.” Staff referred to people they supported with respect and genuine regard. One relative said, “The staff are excellent and really caring. We couldn’t wish for a better location for their family member.” We saw people’s personal dignity was promoted by staff. This included ensuring any interventions were completed in privacy. People had access to their own rooms, living areas and garden areas where they could spend time with friends, families or their house mates.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The service treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. For example, 1 person told us about being involved in decorating their own living areas and how the staff supported them to make decisions which reflected their individual preferences. People were known by those supporting them. Staff could tell us about each individuals personal life experiences, those who mattered to them, their abilities and goals for the future.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were supported to be independent. Their individual care and support plans outlined what they could do themselves, what they needed assistance with and how they could build on their existing skills with encouragement. One relative described how their family member had progressed since living at Fairview. This included a gentle and supportive approach by staff to encourage their independence at a pace set by their family member. They believed this approach was right for their family member and reflected their preferred way of learning.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The service listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People were involved in the development of their individual care and support plans. Their personal needs and preferences were recorded, known and promoted by staff. People were empowered to have their say about things that were important to them, listened too and then these acted on. For instance, we saw 1 person engaged with a staff member about a specific activity. They expressed a little anxiety but were able to openly express this with a staff member who listened and worked through the anxiety with the person. We later saw this person return from their activity talking about how they enjoyed it.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, which supported and enabled staff to deliver person-centred care. The provider had policies and procedures in place to support staff wellbeing. For example, they had specific health and wellbeing policies to support staff and make reasonable adjustments in the workplace. One staff member told us about specific issues relating to their health. They went on to say the provider supported them throughout which demonstrated to them they were a valued employee.
