Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People's independence was promoted. For example, a person had been supported to redevelop skills to eat and drink independently and made significant progress in their own health goals. At the time of our assessment, the service had supported a person with a referral to obtain a more appropriate mobility aid; this meant they would have increased access to community activities.

Care plans were written in a person-centred way and included up-to-date information about people's preferences, what they could do independently, their interests and their cultural and spiritual beliefs. There were systems in place to regularly review care plans.

Staff had a good understanding of people's needs and respected people's choices and preferences. Staff gave us examples of how they supported and promoted people's independence whilst still being on hand to provide support and advice where needed. For example, a staff member told us, " We prompt [Person] to feed [themselves] and take [their] own medication. We observe this so [Person} manages it safely." The manager felt a person-centred culture was embedded in the service and was very natural to the staff.
