Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 15 January to 27 March 2025.

Woodstock Care Home Limited is a care home with nursing that can accommodate up to 28 older people, some of whom may be living with a dementia. At the time of our inspection there were 27 people living in the home.

The last rating for this service was ‘Good’ (report published 19 October 2018). We carried out this assessment primarily because of the length of time since the last inspection. We looked at all the quality statements and the overall rating for this service remains good.

People received a safe service, were protected from abuse or neglect and had their human rights promoted. Robust recruitment procedures were followed. There were sufficient staff to meet people’s needs and keep them safe. Risks to people were assessed and their safety was monitored and managed. Accidents and incidents were monitored and analysed, so lessons could be learned and recurrences avoided. Staff followed effective infection control procedures.

People had their needs assessed and care plans were compiled to meet their individual requirements. People were supported to live healthy and safe lifestyles and had full support to access healthcare professionals, as needed. Staff understood the Mental Capacity Act and made sure people consented to their care and support. People were supported in the least restrictive way possible and had maximum choice and control of their lives.

Care plans were regularly reviewed and kept up to date. Managers carried out regular audits. People were supported to make a complaint if needed and they were listened to and responded to appropriately. Information from complaints, comments or concerns was used to help drive improvement.

People received a personalised service and were fully involved in all aspects of their care and support. Staff worked with people in accordance with their care plans, but also made sure people were encouraged to do as much for themselves as possible. Information was accessible and available to people in a format suitable for their communication needs. Equality and diversity was consistently promoted and respected for everyone.

People's experience of this service

We spoke with people staying at Woodstock Care Home and their representatives. Most people we spoke with expressed a positive view of the home. People’s representatives told us their loved ones were supported to be safe with equipment such as sensor mats and call bells and were supported to safely remain mobile. People confirmed that lessons were learned if things went wrong and changes were made to improve the service.

Individuals said they were comfortable raising concerns and knew who to contact if they needed to do this. A person told us, “I would talk to the manager if I needed to, but I’ve got nothing to complain about.”

Those we spoke with said care staff were kind and caring. They also told us staff were always respectful and asked for their consent before providing care. A person’s representative told us, following a recent visit, “What stood out most was the staff. They were clearly engaged with the residents, enjoying themselves alongside them, and it felt very natural and kind rather than clinical.”

Most individuals and their relatives told us they were happy with the staffing levels. However, a few people said they felt the home could do with more staff and made comments such as, “There is always someone about, but sometimes it is difficult to get out when you want to go home.” And “It sometimes takes a while to be let in.”

People told us the home was clean and hygienic and that staff followed appropriate infection control procedures. A person’s representative told us, “We were genuinely impressed by the atmosphere and standard of care. The home was clean, welcoming and had a lovely, uplifting fee.” And “My [relative]’s room was also lovely – bright, well-kept, with an ensuite and good storage – and overall the home felt fresh and pleasant.”

There was positive feedback about the support they received with medicines and said staff helped them to access healthcare professionals when needed.

People and most representatives told us they had been involved in needs assessments and compiling care plans and risk assessments. They said these were regularly reviewed and updated if changes were needed. People and their representatives said care packages were tailored to their individual needs and told us they felt in control and their choices were respected.

People felt they were treated fairly, and nobody had experienced any discrimination or inequality.

The registered manager was described as approachable and helpful and said they felt the service was very well managed. A person’s representative told us, “There is always someone around when I visit, so if I have any questions and the carers can’t answer them, they will get someone who can. Nothing seems too much trouble.”
