Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 29 August 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with carers and / or family members.

Our judgement

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff

Reasons for our judgement

We found that staff were given handbooks during the induction process which provided them with job descriptions for all of the agency's support and care roles. We looked at these handbooks and found other information which included the agency's code of practice, the supervision and appraisal policy and the agency's whistleblowing and safeguarding procedures and contacts. There were also guides for staff relating to the completion of paperwork and their day to day role. We saw training records which showed that staff had completed a variety of training courses relevant to their role, such as medication, manual handling, infection control, food hygiene and safeguarding vulnerable adults. Staff we spoke with confirmed that they were required to complete training and were encouraged to obtain a health and social care diploma.

We looked at four staff records and saw evidence that their training record was complete with no omissions. For example, all staff had had training in infection control, moving and handling and medication administration.

Staff had supervision every three months as a minimum. The registered manager informed us that staff have annual appraisal. We saw evidence of regular supervision notes and appraisal being carried out in the four staff files.

A member of staff we spoke with told us "the management at this agency are really approachable and easy to talk to. I can always ask them for guidance and support without being judged". The staff member also confirmed they had regular supervision and an annual appraisal.
