All Inspections

21 May 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we observed and listened to staff interacting with people who use the service in a polite, respectful and encouraging manner. They showed warmth and thoughtfulness when giving support to people. Their communication with people was positive and clearly showed that staff knew people and their needs well.

Effective quality auditing procedures were undertaken and appropriate systems were in place for gathering, recording and evaluating information about the quality of the service provided.

Care workers supported people living in the home to take their medicines at times that met their individual needs and preferences. Nobody we spoke with raised any concerns about how their medicines were handled and described the care workers as 'helpful' and 'friendly.'

During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection we found a lack of recording in assessments of care or nursing needs, assessments of capacity, risk assessments, medication administration and care plans. Additionally we found no evidence of care records being systematically reviewed or audited. Records we looked at were not up to date to support people's care needs. Management of medicines was not always clear and complete. Medicines were not always administered at the prescribed dose and given at the correct time. The manager was unable to provide evidence of suitable arrangements to monitor or assess the quality of the records or the care people received.

12 September 2012

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with during the visit to the home felt the care and support provided could be improved and more activities provided. People commented that they did not feel that safe in the home.

People told us that staff were approachable but very busy. One person who used the service said: 'Staff are friendly but there is nothing to do. We just eat and sleep.' Another person said 'I don't like living here because it is boring.' We found that people were being supported by staff they had got to know, and who cared about them. We saw and heard staff support people in ways that did maintain people's dignity.

Relatives and people using the service were concerned that the staff did not know what to do if the fire alarm went off. Some people told us that when the fire alarm had gone off recently. staff had not explained to them what was happening. Staff did not know who to contact or what to do and people did not feel safe.
