All Inspections

16 March 2022

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced focused inspection on 16 March 2022 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we usually ask five key questions, however due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to reduce time spent on site, only the following three questions were asked:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic appeared to be visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect and staff took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system took account of patients’ needs.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • Complaints were dealt with positively and efficiently.
  • The dental clinic had information governance arrangements.

Background

The provider has two practices and this report is about Wrenthorpe Dental Care.

Wrenthorpe Dental Care is in Wakefield and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

The practice does not have level access so any patients who cannot access this practice could be seen at the sister practice at Wrenthorpe Health Centre which is fully accessible. Car parking spaces, including dedicated parking for people with disabilities, are available near the practice.

The dental team includes four dentists, including a part-time oral surgeon, three dental nurses, including two trainee dental nurses, two dental therapists, three receptionists and the practice manager. The practice has two treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with one dentist, three dental nurses, one dental therapist, two receptionists and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5:30pm

Friday from 9am to 5pm.

10 December 2013

During a routine inspection

We visited the service on 10 December 2013 as part of our scheduled inspection programme.

On the day of the inspection we spoke in person with one person and over the telephone with two people who used the service. We also spoke with the provider of the service who is the principal dentist, the practice manager and four members of staff.

Patients told us they were 'More than satisfied' with the service and that staff were, "Friendly and professional." One person said, "This practice is absolutely excellent." Another person said, "All the staff are approachable and I am always seen on time."

People we spoke with told us they felt safe in the care of the dentist. They said that all members of the staff team acted in a professional manner.

Everyone commented on the cleanliness of the practice. People said they regularly saw staff making sure that the surgery was clean, tidy and hygienic. We found people received care and treatment in a clean environment with infection control measures in place to minimise the risk of infection.

Staff that we spoke with said they were very well supported by the registered provider to carry out their role. Staff said they were up to date with all mandatory training and we saw confirmation of this.

The provider had an appropriate system in place for gathering, recording and evaluating information about the quality and safety of care the service provided.
