Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.People and families told us that staff were caring and kind. Staff were passionate about providing good care and wanted to act in the best interests of the people. One staff member said, “We have got to stand up for everyone and show everyone kindness.”Staff teams worked well together and spoke of how they wanted everyone to live a good quality of life. One staff member said, “It is nice to make them happy, it is their lives. I love it when I leave someone laughing.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.Staff and managers spent time to get to know people and to understand their individual preferences. Their knowledge of people was reflected in how they spoke about people, giving details of people’s likes and dislikes and how they met their individual needs. People’s strengths were supported and staff considered people’s unique cultures and backgrounds to provide personalised care.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.Support was provided to promote people’s independence, giving them control over their lives. Staff encouraged people to try new things and gave them opportunities to be flexible with their care packages. Families told us people had choices. One family member said, “[Person] chooses his own food, chooses where to go and where to eat.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.Staff knew the people well and observed for any signs of pain and discomfort. Care plans had been developed which explained how people expressed if they were in pain or distress so staff could respond quickly.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.The registered manager and senior team were approachable and on site daily to support staff, so they were able to feel confident when providing care. Staff told us the registered manager was supportive and led with care and compassion. The provider invested in staff wellbeing, rewarding staff for good practice and providing incentives to encourage and boost morale. When asked about some of the rewards available 1 staff member said, “It’s nice to be noticed. There are lots of awards we can be nominated for.”
