People should be treated with respect, involved in discussions about their care and treatment and able to influence how the service is run (outcome 1)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Understand the care, treatment and support choices available to them.
  • Can express their views, so far as they are able to do so, and are involved in making decisions about their care, treatment and support.
  • Have their privacy, dignity and independence respected.
  • Have their views and experiences taken into account in the way the service is provided and delivered.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 4 February 2014, checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People’s views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care.

Reasons for our judgement

People who use the service understood the care and treatment choices available to them. We spoke with two people using the service, they told us that their dentist had explained their treatment options clearly to them and gave them opportunities to ask questions regarding their treatment and the costs involved. One person told us " I have been coming here for years and I am very happy with the service and the way I am looked after".

The practice provided comprehensive information, including the treatment options available and their costs so that people could make an informed choice. There was information provided on oral hygiene and the cosmetic dentistry work the practice provided. The provider told us they carried out feedback questionnaires. We looked at a sample of completed questionnaires and found that people commented positively about the service.

Burnopfield Dental Practice does provide NHS services and also some private dentistry services. We viewed some dental records and saw that people were provided with written information about the treatment they required and the costs that were involved. We saw that people had given consent to the treatments and costs.
