Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question requires improvement. At this assessment the rating has changed to good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

We saw lots of positive interactions between people and staff during our visits. Staff were respectful, caring and promoted people’s dignity. One person said, “The care is good and I get treated really well.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

Staff were alert to people’s needs and offered support that reflected their individual needs and preferences. People were encouraged to go to the dining room for meals and join in activities. People's decisions if they chose not to join in were respected. Electronic care plans were reviewed and updated in line with people’s individual needs and preferences.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

Staff promoted people’s independence where this was safe to do so. Staff explained things to people in a way they understood, seeking their views and respecting their decisions.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

A comprehensive induction and training programme was in place and staff received regular supervision. Staff told us there had been lots of improvements at the service in recent months due to a new management team which comprised of a new registered manager, care manager and a regional support manager. Staff said they were now well supported and their feedback was sought and acted upon.
