People’s independence and choice were actively supported and promoted. People were supported and encouraged to be involved in a variety of activities which offered them a range of opportunities specific to their personal interests. Peoples support was person centred, and reflected their choices and needs.

Independence, choice and control

Staff demonstrated a kind and caring approach. People were happy and comfortable in staff’s presence and would engage proactively. One relative said of their loved one, “He makes his own decisions on a lot of things.” Another relative said, “He's been doing a lot more than his previous care home. He’s going out a lot more and doing more visits.”

Care plans were person centred and demonstrated an involvement of people in their choices and care planning. There was a positive approach to the planning of activities relevant to people at the service, and an emphasis on maintaining an active approach. People were supported to attend local clubs where they engaged in games and activities. One person played football while another person loved arts and crafts and was supported to attend a local woodworking shop. People were supported to engage and support with local community activities. One person was involved in garden maintenance at a local park, while two others were involved in cleaning and maintaining local hospital gardens. Two people had recently supported the recent poppy appeal by attending the Salvation Army tea morning. Staff supported people to actively maintain their home and contributed to household tasks. One staff member commented that one service user “was a master in the kitchen” and they often liked to cook things from scratch. One person liked to support staff with the house shopping, and this had been integrated into their weekly routine. People’s level of interest and involvement in completing household tasks varied and staff adapted routines to support this. There was a good awareness by staff of family relationships and how to best support these. Visits to the home were supported by the service. Relatives told us that they visited without restriction and spoke to their loved ones on the phone.

Observations of staff was that activities were supported and encouraged. Staff spoke positively about supporting people with activities they liked and encouraging them to develop. Staff stated that the home has access to its own transport vehicle which is used to facilitate people’s activities. Staff also stated that some people like to have long walks so some activities were accessed by foot, or people were supported to use public transport safely. One staff member said, “I like going out with them and getting involved with activities. They are the ones planning the activities.” One staff member said, “It’s a very supportive team and I feel able to speak up.”
