At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good.

This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. During our assessment we saw people being treated with kindness, empathy and respect. We observed staff ensuring people’s privacy and dignity by knocking on people’s doors before entering and closing the doors when supporting people with their care.

People told us that they felt well cared for. One person told us, “I cannot speak too highly of the care team, very kind. It’s a vocation, they enjoy their job, and they really look after everyone really well.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People’s care plans detailed how people at The Laurels Care Home were encouraged to make everyday decisions.

People told us that staff supported them to make choices. One person said the staff support them in choosing clothes, and they are asked when they want to go to bed.

People had been supported to personalise their rooms and staff knew what people liked, including their preferences for food and drinks.

A relative told us, “I supported with [person’s] care plan, we sat down and went through everything, such as [person’s] likes and dislikes.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People’s care plans had information regarding people’s likes and dislikes, and how to support people in day-to-day life.

We observed staff promoting people’s independence, encouraging people to access their home and to be part of activities if they wished and respected their choice if they didn’t want to take part.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

We observed staff responding promptly to call bells and when people ask for assistance, which ensured people’s needs were met in a timely manner.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff enjoyed their job roles and told us they felt well supported by the management team. Staff were supported to develop through training, meetings and regular supervisions enabling them to have discussions about their job roles and any help they may need. A staff member told us, “Manager is really lovely, I know anything I go to them with they will action.”
