We checked that people who use this service

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 10 May 2013, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Reasons for our judgement

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights.

We spoke with some of the people who used the service. They told us that they were happy with the dental care they received at Pennypot Dental Practice. The said that they had been asked about their medical history and that the dentist had explained things to them as their treatment proceeded. They considered their pain relief to have been effective and that their treatments had provided the expected results. One person told us “I was really scared at the last dentist, fillings were painful. My new dentist gives me the injections I need and now I don’t worry about fillings anymore.”

Care and treatment was planned and delivered by trained, registered and qualified staff; this ensured people’s safety and welfare. A detailed medical history was taken for each person; were saw evidence that this was updated at each consultation. Staff told us and we saw that there was a system that flagged up any health risks when the person’s file was accessed. This meant that treatments were identified that were suitable for people from a health perspective and those that were not.

People’s care and treatment reflected relevant research and guidance. The dental team were kept up to date with regular training and development. This was achieved by attending conferences, refresher and in house training. Staff were enabled to continue their professional development by being provided with appropriate up to date guidance and training in key subjects such as infection control, medical emergencies, and the safe use of X-rays.

There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies. All staff had received training in how to deal with a medical emergency and how to use the medical equipment should one occur. Staff were able to demonstrate awareness of their particular roles and responsibilities during a medical emergency and how they would work as a team.

We saw a selection of leaflets available to people who used the service that included information and advice about gum health and how to brush your teeth correctly. There was also detailed information about more complicated options such as having a wisdom tooth removed. Staff were able to demonstrate how these leaflets were used to compliment the advice given by the dentist during a consultation.

We saw risk assessment for people who had been prescribed complicated oral surgery. The risks and benefits of such treatments were explained and recorded in the person’s notes. People who had received oral surgery were given comprehensive pre and post visit instructions to follow so that any risks related to receiving this type of treatment were reduced to a minimum.

This meant that people who used the service experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their right.
