Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 16 July 2025.
Fieldway Care Home provides nursing and personal care and support to older people. The service can accommodate up to 68 people over 2 separate floors. The top floor specialises in providing care to people living with dementia. At the time of this inspection, 67 people resided at the care home, half of whom were living with dementia.
We undertook this inspection because we received information of concern from the local authority about the higher than expected number of safeguarding referrals they had received in relation to this care home in the last 12 months.
This unannounced onsite responsive inspection was conducted by 2 adult social care inspectors. We reviewed all 15 quality statements related to the 2 key questions, Is the service safe and well-led? For those key questions not inspected, we used the ratings awarded at their last inspection to calculate the overall rating.
Based on the findings of this inspection we continued to rate the service good overall.
The service had also made improvements to the way they maintained and managed records including, people’s care plans and staff supervision notes.
The atmosphere in the care home on the day of our inspection remained relaxed and calm throughout our visit. Feedback from managers and staff was positive.
People were protected and kept safe. Staff understood and managed risks. The facilities and equipment met the needs of people, were clean and well-maintained and any risks mitigated. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. Managers made sure staff received training and regular support and appraisals to maintain good-quality care. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally. People with protected characteristics felt supported. Staff understood their roles and responsibilities. Managers and staff worked with external health and social care professionals to deliver the best possible care and were receptive to innovative ideas. There was a culture of continuous learning and improvement and people could raise concerns. Managers investigated incidents thoroughly.
People's experience of this service
During our inspection, we received email feedback about the service from 8 relatives/friends and 4 external community health and/or social care professionals. We also spoke to various managers and staff who worked at the care home including, the registered manager, deputy manager, the clinical-lead nurse, 2 nurses, 5 care workers, the senior administrator, a domestic worker and the maintenance person.
People’s relatives were positive about the quality of the care and support provided at the home. People described the culture within the care home as open, friendly and welcoming and the staff who worked there, as kind and compassionate. Typical feedback included, “My relative is kept very well and safe at the care home. Staff are kind, empathetic and caring,” “I have absolutely no issues with the care my relative receives at Fieldway. The staff I have personally spoken with, have always been attentive, caring, compassionate, knowledgeable and happy to help” and “I have nothing but praise for how my [family member] is looked after at the care home.I am relieved they live in a warm, safe environment where there are plenty of superb staff to care for her.”
People’s safety was prioritised and managers and staff knew how to keep people safe from abuse or harm. People were treated with kindness and compassion by suitably knowledgeable and skilled staff.
Some people could not directly tell us about their experiences of living at the care home. We used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received good care. This approach showed people were included and listened to and staff consistently interacted positively with them.
