During a routine inspection

We did not have the opportunity to speak to patients as no appointments were booked at the time of the inspection. We looked at recent patient feedback. In this the majority of patients said that they were given appropriate information about their options and treatment plan, that they had the opportunity to ask questions and that explanations were provided in a way that they could understand. They said that they were treated politely and with respect, described Professor Kirwan as "a total professional" and said he was "ready to listen and help in any way".

Patients provided appropriate medical details prior to surgery to ensure that it would be safe for patients to undergo the procedure. They were provided with information on how to prepare for surgery and how to care for themselves afterwards. Follow-up appointments were arranged as necessary. In recent patient feedback patients said they were "extremely pleased" and "completely satisfied" with their treatment and described Professor Kirwan as an "excellent" surgeon.

Staff at the service knew how to recognise signs of possible abuse and how to report them, including to the local authority. They had annual appraisals and undertook training relevant to the services provided. Comments and complaints patients made were responded to appropriately.
