Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 25 March to 3 April 2025. The service is a residential care home providing support to up to 17 people with a learning disability and autistic people. At the time of our assessment, 14 people were living at the service. We undertook this assessment following concerns we received about the quality of the care people received. We found people received safe care and were happy living at Apple Blossom Court. We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

Some improvements were needed to the oversight of medicines to ensure all records were updated in a timely manner following changes. Aspects of the environment needed further focus to ensure the highest levels of cleanliness and to ensure furniture and fixings within the service were well maintained. Despite this we saw improvements had been made to the environment since our last inspection. People were involved in decisions about decoration, which was personalised and homely. Care plans were detailed and person centred and reflected best practice with regards to how to effectively support people with a learning disability and autistic people. People were supported to make informed decisions about their care and had ample opportunities to engage in activities and learning opportunities both at home and in their local community. Systems were in place to keep people safe from the risk of abuse and to learn lessons from events which occurred. The registered manager demonstrated a commitment to continuous improvement through governance systems. People were supported to attend medical appointments when needed and the provider worked closely with other agencies to ensure health and social outcomes were achieved for people.

People's experience of this service

We spoke with people who used the service, family members and professional advocates. People felt safe living at Apple Blossom Court and said they would speak with staff or the registered manager if they had any concerns. People liked the staff who were described as kind and caring. Our observations demonstrated staff to be caring, attentive and respectful. Staff engaged well with people and sought consent before assisting them with their care. Staff encouraged people to make decisions and be as independent as they were able to be. People’s families were free to visit when they wished, and people were able to access a wide variety of activities which reflected their interests, hobbies and personal goals.
