Ratings - Child and adolescent mental health wards
Our view of the service
Potters Bar Clinic child and adolescent mental health) low secure wards are provided by Elysium Healthcare Limited. Jasper ward was an 11-bedded mixed sex ward and Opal ward was a 7-bedded mixed sex ward. All bedrooms had en-suite facilities. Potters Bar Clinic provided the following regulated activities:
- Assessment or medical treatment for persons detained under the Mental Health Act 1983
- Treatment of disease, disorder or injury
We completed an unannounced inspection of inpatient Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) on 19 February 2026. At the time of inspection, the wards were at full capacity.
The service was last inspected in August 2023, where no breaches were found. The service was rated as good.
At this inspection we assessed all key questions, and we rated the service as good. No breaches were found.
Mental Health Act
Leaders ensured that staff received training in the Mental Health Act. Training compliance for Mental Health Act code of practice was 95%. Young people were explained their rights under the Mental Health Act. Young people had access to information on independent mental health advocates.
People's experience of this service
We spoke with 9 young people during our inspection. Most young people told us they felt safe at Potters Bar Clinic. One young person told us they always felt safe because there were lots of staff around. Some young people told us there were times when they felt less safe on the ward, due to escalation in young people’s behaviour.
Young people had a mixed view of restrictive practice at Potters Bar Clinic. Some young people told us that staff knew what to say and how to help. Other young people told us restraint often took place on the floor.
Young people told us the environment was mostly clean, and the ward was cleaned daily. However, some young people told us blood was not cleaned thoroughly following an incident. Two young people told us their showers were cold.
Most young people felt that staff were kind and compassionate. During our inspection we observed staff being kind and compassionate towards young people.
