People's personal records, including medical records, should be accurate and kept safe and confidential (outcome 21)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Their personal records including medical records are accurate, fit for purpose, held securely and remain confidential.
  • Other records required to be kept to protect their safety and well being are maintained and held securely where required.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 10 December 2012, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People's confidentiality was maintained. However, improvements were required to ensure this was consistent.

Reasons for our judgement

We spoke with people at the dental practice, but their comments did not relate to this outcome.

Our inspection of 6 August 2012 had found that records were not always securely stored to maintained people's confidentiality. During this inspection, we found that some improvements had been made. However, we found two dental records in one treatment room. One did not contain any personal information, or records within. The second one did not have any dental records, but did have personal information on the front. We found that all other dental records were stored in lockable cabinets, securely. The provider may find it useful to note that patient confidentiality should be maintained at all times.
