People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 24 July 2013, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

Reasons for our judgement

The dentists had current registration with the GDC. Both dental nurses had recently finished their training and had not yet registered with the GDC, but both were supervised at all times by the dentists. All dental staff had enhanced criminal records bureau (CRB) checks.

Staff files included a copy of professional registration for the dentists and up to date records from the university for the nurses, CRB checks, immunisation records, job descriptions and records of all training and other professional development. Staff told us that the provider was "approachable" and was responsive to any concerns raised. Staff also said there was good team working at the practice and that the service "runs smoothly".

The dentists had professional indemnity insurance for themselves. The provider had liability insurance which covered the entire practice.
