Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 26 September 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with staff. We reviewed information given to us by the provider.

We also looked at recent satisfaction survey results.

Our judgement

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

Reasons for our judgement

New dental nurses were required to complete an induction programme of training and shadowing of experienced dental staff.

Staff carried out mandatory training together as a practice. We saw training certificates for dental staff. This ensured they met their continual professional development (CPD) points to maintain their professional membership with the General Dental Council (GDC).

Staff received appropriate professional development. Staff received formal appraisals and personal development plans (PDP). We saw completed examples of an appraisal and a PDP. The staff member’s performance, training needs and developmental objectives were discussed.
