Our view of the service

The inspection was undertaken on 31 March 2026. It was undertaken due to the time since the last inspection.

Farmhouse Residential Rest Home provides accommodation and personal care for up to 23 people, some of whom may be living with dementia. One person living at the service had a learning disability. The service was not registered to support this specific need. However, we found the person’s primary need was ‘age related’. We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed autistic people and people with a learning disability respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

The provider promoted a positive culture of safety, with concerns reported, investigated and used to drive learning and improvement. Incidents and complaints were responded to promptly and transparently, with learning shared through staff training to reduce risk. Effective partnership working and clear systems supported continuity of care and people’s safety, with appropriate referrals made when needs could not be fully met. However, the provider’s governance systems in the form of audits did not always ensure when shortfalls were identified these were passed on to the relevant person to make the desired improvements.

There were some gaps in the administration of medicines which meant the provider may not always be assured medicines were being administered safely. Some improvements were required to ensure information was accessible for people based on their individual needs and ways of communication.

Staff knew people well and treated them with dignity and respect. People had choices around their daily routines and care was person centred.

There were enough suitably trained staff to meet the needs of the people using the service, who had been safely recruited and felt valued and supported by the management.

People's experience of this service

People told us they were happy living at Farmhouse Residential Rest Home and felt they were treated with dignity and respect. We observed a positive, person-centred culture where individuals were supported to make choices about their daily routines, including when they got up and went to bed.

An activity coordinator was in post and worked proactively to engage people in activities aligned with their interests. These included meaningful community outings such as trips for coffee and cake or fish and chips, which people clearly enjoyed.

Relatives were welcomed at any time, and we observed visitors throughout the inspection. Families told us they felt well informed about their loved one’s care and were involved in decision-making when appropriate. One relative said, “Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. They are very welcoming and keep me updated. They don’t need to ring me; I am here most days.”

Meals looked appetising and people were offered a range of choices to meet their individual preferences. Snacks, including chocolate mousse and biscuits, were available between meals, ensuring people had access to food throughout the day.

People’s rooms were tastefully decorated and personalised, reflecting their interests and preferences. Corridors were designed to be dementia friendly, using block colours and reminiscence items to support orientation and engagement. A redecoration programme was underway at the time of the inspection, including work in the dining room. People using the service and their relatives had been actively involved in choosing the colour scheme for the walls.
