Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 16 April 2025 to 29 April 2025. We conducted this assessment as at a previous inspection in 2023 we identified breaches of regulations relating to good governance, and staffing, and rated the location as requires improvement overall. In addition, since the 2023 inspection the service had undergone organisational change, and now operated solely as a walk in centre, whereas previously it had operated as a GP practice and walk in centre. At this assessment we examined all quality statements across the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led key questions. The service has been rated as good overall, and due to improvements made is no longer in breach of regulations related to good governance, and staffing.
Shakespeare Walk in Centre is located at Burmantofts Health Centre, Cromwell Mount, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS9 7TA. This is approximately 2 miles east of Leeds city centre. The service is operated by One Medicare Ltd which is registered with the Care Quality Commission for 12 other healthcare locations across the UK. The provider’s head office and operations centre is based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Shakespeare Walk in Centre is commissioned by Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, and the premises are leased from Leeds Community Health Trust, which is responsible for the maintenance of the building. The service is registered with the Care Quality Commission to deliver the following regulated activities; diagnostic and screening procedures, family planning, maternity and midwifery services, surgical procedures, and treatment of disease, disorder or injury. The practice is situated within the NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board. Due to the nature of a walk in service, it is open for any patients to attend with ailments and medical concerns they would usually use a regular GP service for. At the time of the assessment the majority of those who use the service are walk in patients, although 10 pre-bookable appointments are available via NHS 111. From April 2024 to March 2025 the service dealt with over 48,000 patients. The service operates 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm and is staffed until 9pm. This includes bank holidays. The walk in centre clinical team consists of 1 clinical lead, 5 nurse practitioners, and 1 triage nurse practitioner. These staff are supported by a service manager, a service coordinator, and 6 patient navigators. Other support is provided centrally by the provider. At the time of our assessment the service was working towards moving from operating as a walk in centre to being an urgent treatment centre, and would therefore start dealing with more injury related presentations.
People's experience of this service
Patient feedback showed that the majority of the patients who attended the service were positive regarding their care and treatment. For example, 87% of the 37 respondents to the NHS Friends and Family Test who attended the service between November 2024 and February 2025 would recommend the service to others, and were positive about their experience.
