Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 19 August to 3 September 2025.

Reason for assessment was due to a series of whistleblowing cases and an aged rating. We assessed 33 quality statements across safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led.

Medisec Ambulance Service is an independent ambulance service based in Southampton. The organisation operates from a main headquarters site in Southampton and two satellite sites based in co-working spaces, which are primarily used for parking the vehicles. The service currently operates a total of 12 vehicles, comprising of 4 secure vehicles, 5 patient transport vehicles and 3 vehicles specialised for bariatric patients.

The service has downsized since previous assessments, now providing fewer transport services. The service was contracted by a local mental health trust to provide secure patient transfers for both NHS and private patients and subcontracted to support patient discharges from the local NHS acute hospital. This was a reduction compared with their previous range of activities.

At our last assessment, we rated the patient transport service as good. At this assessment, the rating remains good overall, as the service continued to perform well across most areas.

However, we identified ongoing issues around governance and oversight, like those highlighted at the previous assessment. We found a breach of regulation relating to good governance, indicating improvements in governance systems are still required

During the assessment we spoke with patients who all provided positive feedback about the service and staff. We observed kind and compassionate interactions between staff and patients and saw correspondence from the service that was sensitive to patients’ needs.

We spoke with external stakeholders. They praised the service and the care patients received.

We checked patient survey results and found that 100% of the feedback in the last 12 months was positive.
