During a routine inspection

The Disabled Children's team provides support for children and young people with complex needs. The service is provided on a short term bases and provides support for the children and their families.

During our inspection we spoke with the registered manager, two community care workers and four relatives of children who received a service from the agency.

Relatives told us that they really valued the service provided by the Disabled children's team. Comments we received included: 'the service has been brilliant, we have regular meetings to discuss how things are going. The staff working with X have been excellent' and 'I couldn't fault the service. The staff are awesome and are always on time'. All the relatives we spoke with would recommend the service to other people.

We found that children, young people and their families or carers were involved in the planning and reviewing of the support provided to them.

Care and support was planned and delivered in a child centred manner. This meant it was based on the individual needs of the child or young person.

We found that the provider had policies and procedures in place that ensured that children and young people using the service were protected from abuse.

The Disabled Children's team had sufficient suitably qualified staff to meet the needs of the people they were supporting.

We found that the provider had effective systems in place to monitor the quality of the service they provided.

During a routine inspection

We completed telephone interviews with four young people receiving a service. We spoke with their parents due to their complex needs to gain an insight into the service that was being provided by the disabled children's team. In addition we spoke with three members of staff and the acting manager for the service.

We spoke to four relatives about the care and support they received from the Disabled Children's team. They told us they were happy with the staff that were supporting them. Relatives told us the individual staff kept them informed of how the activity had gone or any incidents during each session but there was no follow up from the management team. This usually took place with the social worker.

Relatives told us that they felt the service was valuable, but often there was not enough time for staff to truly engage with an activity in the short time that was allocated to them.

When we spoke to parents they were unsure whether they had a support plan detailing how the Children's disabled Team were going to support them and their child. Although all the relatives confirmed they had signed the plan of care they were not sure whether they had been given a copy. In addition none of the parents had a copy of the service's statement of purpose detailing the aims and objectives of the service or complaint procedure. The provider should note that people using the service should have clear information about what is available to them to enable them to make a complaint.
