Our view of the service

This assessment took place on 30 September 2026.

Royal Leamington Spa Nursing Home is a care home providing personal and nursing care for up to 43 people. At the time of our assessment, 36 people were living at the home.

This assessment was undertaken to follow up on breaches of regulations identified at the previous assessment relating to the environment and good governance. At this assessment we found improvements and the provider was no longer in breach of regulations.

Since the last assessment, the provider had made significant improvements to the safety and environment of the home. Extensive work had been completed to address the concerns previously identified, including structural improvements that had been developed in partnership with relevant professionals and the fire service. Improvements had also been made to enhance the safety of the premises and ensure the environment was suitable to meet people's needs.

Improvements had also been made to governance and oversight arrangements. Systems were more effective in identifying, monitoring and addressing issues, providing managers with greater assurance regarding the quality and safety of care. The provider had strengthened its approach to auditing, risk management and quality assurance, resulting in better oversight of the service.

There were effective systems for monitoring accidents, incidents, complaints and safeguarding concerns, with learning used to drive improvements. Medicines were managed safely, infection prevention and control measures were effective, and systems were in place to assess and mitigate risks to people. Staff had taken on additional champion roles and demonstrated commitment to supporting improvements across the service.

People were supported by sufficient numbers of suitably skilled staff. Staff received training, supervision and support to carry out their roles safely and effectively. Staff spoke positively about the culture within the service and described good teamwork and visible support from the registered manager, nominated individual and senior leaders.

The registered manager encouraged feedback from people, relatives and staff and used this information to inform service improvements. The registered manager had also engaged with local networks, forums and external organisations to share learning, develop good practice and support the continued development of the service.

People's experience of this service

People received care and support from an established staff team who knew them well and understood their individual needs and preferences. People and relatives spoke positively about the service and described staff as caring, supportive and respectful. People felt safe living at the home and were confident staff would respond appropriately if they raised concerns.

People said there were enough staff to support them and that they received their medicines when needed. They lived in a clean environment and were supported to access healthcare appointments and specialist advice. Staff used detailed care plans and risk assessments to provide safe support, including for people with complex needs or reduced mobility.

People’s views were sought through care reviews, meetings and day-to-day conversations, helping them remain involved in decisions about their care and support.

People were also supported to plan for the future, including expressing their wishes and preferences for end-of-life care.
