Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 27 August 2025. Primary Care Sheffield provides out of hours extended access services and some general practice services in ‘hubs’ across the city of Sheffield. All the ‘hub’ sites are existing GP surgeries and are mostly staffed by local GPs, clinical and non-clinical staff to provide a mix of services as an extension of routine GP services. As part of this assessment we reviewed the enhanced extended access service, the same day urgent care service which included a home visiting service and the sexual health and community gynaecology service. We visited the main site where the management and administration team were located and 4 of the hub sites across the city (Fairlawns Medical Centre, Norwood Medical Centre, Greystone Medical Centre and Darnall Primary Care Centre). We did not inspect the mental health service or the vasectomy service as part of this assessment. The provider is Primary Care Sheffield Ltd (PCS). PCS is owned and directed by 75 of Sheffield’s General Practices, covering 600,000 people with a mandate to support improvements in patient care through a unified approach to supporting general practice and scaled provision of services. This is the first assessment for this service following a change of registration with CQC. The provider remains the same, however, the location’s head office address had changed. This assessment considered the demographics of the people using the service, the context the service was working within and how this impacted service delivery. Where relevant, further commentary is provided in the quality statements section of this report.
People's experience of this service
People were positive about the quality of their care and treatment. The NHS Friends and Family Test showed people were highly satisfied with services. Every patient who attended a service was invited to participate in the test. We looked at data from April to June 2025. For the extended access clinics, 94% of patients rated the service either very good or good. For the sexual health clinic hubs 97% of patients rated the service very good or good and 94% rated the home visiting service as either very good or good. The majority of feedback was positive with patients reporting that staff were helpful, kind and friendly. They felt listened to and involved in decisions about their care and were happy with their treatment. They reported the service as being convenient, especially for those that worked, and others reported they were happy they were seen the same day.
