Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 11 November 2025.
EMED Sussex is an independent ambulance service providing non-emergency patient transport services (NEPTS) across Sussex. The service is operated by ERS Transition - Trading as EMED Group Limited and assumed responsibility for providing the Sussex NEPTS contract in April 2025. EMED Sussex provides NEPTS across the whole of Sussex and is free at the point of use for all eligible patients.
We commenced a comprehensive assessment of patient transport services on 11 November 2025. This was in response to information of concern and because this service had not been assessed since registered in July 2025.
This is the first time we have assessed and rated this service. We assessed patient transport services using our comprehensive assessment methodology. We assessed all key questions and all quality statements.
This assessment looked at Patient Transport Service, which we rated requires improvement.
We identified breaches of Regulation 12 (Safe Care and Treatment) and Regulation 17 (Good Governance), where delayed and aborted transport journeys impacted on treatment times for some patients who attended for renal dialysis. This put these patients at risk of harm and risks were compounded by ineffective oversight and monitoring.
We rated the location EMED Sussex as requires improvement.
