Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 13 to 17 February 2025. Lavender House is a residential care home providing personal care for up to 16 people. At the time of our assessment there were 14 people using the service. The assessment was in response to information of concern received regarding the quality and safety of the service.

At the last inspection the rating was good, during this assessment the rating has changed to requires improvement.

We identified 2 breaches of the regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance.

Medicines were not always stored, administered and managed safely. Medication errors were not dealt with in a timely manner and medical advice had not been sought when needed. There was no robust process for staff members to raise medication concerns.

The governance arrangements in place were not robust and records were not always adequately maintained. Audits were not effective and the quality systems in place failed to identify the issues found during the assessment. Incidents were not regularly analysed and care plans were not always updated with people’s relevant information. Care plans lacked detail to guide staff in how to support people appropriately.

Safe recruitment practices were in place and staff understood their roles and responsibilities. There were enough staff to provide safe and effective care, however, refresher training was not up to date and staff did not receive regular supervision. People were treated with kindness, empathy and compassion, feedback from people and relatives corroborated this. Staff protected people’s dignity, and we observed frequent positive interactions with people. The provider worked well with other health professionals to support people.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
