Caring
We assessed 2 quality statements for this key question. We found that staff delivered kind and compassionate care to their patients, however staff did not always feel supported to carry out their roles.

Kindness, compassion and dignity
Patients received care that was kind, compassionate and respectful. We observed professional and empathetic interactions between staff and patients, including in challenging situations.
Most prisoners we spoke with told us that healthcare staff listened to them and treated them with respect.
Staff gave examples of going beyond expected duties to support patients, including supporting attendance at hospital appointments, liaising with families, and providing additional reassurance to patients with complex needs such as dementia or terminal illness.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement
Staff had access to wellbeing resources, professional nurse advocates and a range of local wellbeing initiatives. A Freedom to Speak Up policy was in place and had recently been accessible to staff.
Staff told us their morale had improved, and many spoke positively about leadership support. However, some staff reported feeling that their concerns had not always been addressed and described negative experiences. Leaders were aware of these concerns and were trying to resolve them, including a recent away day for staff, but this had not yet been successful and had started to impact on the delivery of services.
