Our view of the service
We assessed Cygnet Hospital Kidsgrove from 12 to 20 January 2026.
We carried out this inspection as it was a newly registered service that had not yet been inspected.
Cygnet Hospital Kidsgrove is run by Cygnet Behavioural Health Limited and is a 31-bedded independent hospital. Cygnet Hospital Kidsgrove provides needs-led services for women who are experiencing an acute episode of mental illness and require an emergency admission who are detained under the Mental Health Act, or on an informal basis.
Cygnet Hospital Kidsgrove was registered with CQC in May 2025 to deliver the regulated activities: Treatment of disease, disorder or injury and Assessment or medical treatment for persons detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.
We visited the following wards as part of our assessment:
- Crocus Ward - Acute service for women with 20 beds
- Burleigh Ward – Highly Specialised Personality Disorder Rehabilitation service with 11 beds
At this assessment we identified breaches of regulations: Person Centered Care (Regulation 9), Safe Care and Treatment (Regulation 12) and Good Governance (Regulation 17).
We assessed 2 assessment service groups; Acute wards for adults of working age and psychiatric intensive care units where we assessed 33 quality statements and Personality disorder services where we assessed 33 quality statements.
We rated the service as Requires Improvement. In the acute ward for adults of working age and psychiatric intensive care units, we found 2 breaches of regulations in relation to: medication administration and governance processes.
In the personality disorder service, we found 3 breaches of regulations in relation to: meeting people’s needs, medication administration, governance processes.
We have asked the provider for action plans in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
