Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question as good. At this assessment the rating has remained a good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect and involved as partners in their care.

The provider consistently treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy. Staff also treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. However, people's dignity was not always promoted in practice. For example, at mealtimes people were provided with aprons resembling large bibs, rather than more dignified alternatives such as dignity scarves or large cloth napkins. Plastic cups and glasses were also used routinely without clear evidence that people's preferences or individual needs had been considered. We would expect to see individual risk assessments where the use of plastic crockery was required to explain the rationale for this approach. Some language used in care records, such as references to, 'challenging behaviour', ‘exit-seeking’ and ‘rude’, did not reflect a person-centred approach or focus on people’s strengths and abilities. This language did not promote a positive image of people. These were areas the registered manager was aware of and training had begun to improve understanding and practices at the service.

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.
