Our view of the service
We conducted a site visit assessment of the service on 9 July 2026. We assessed 33 quality statements across safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led.
The surgery service remained rated Good overall. Staff treated patients with kindness, compassion and respect and involved them in decisions about their care and treatment. Staff worked effectively across multidisciplinary teams to plan and deliver care. The service had systems to support safe care, including pre-assessment processes, infection prevention and control arrangements, and incident reporting systems. Staff identified and planned care for patients with additional needs and made reasonable adjustments to improve access and experience.
At this assessment, we found that previous regulatory breaches had been addressed. The hospital had improved oversight of cleaning arrangements, emergency trolley checks and medicines governance requirements identified at the previous inspection.
However, we identified breaches of regulations relating to governance and safe care and treatment. Although leaders used audits, monitoring systems and governance processes to oversee quality and safety, these arrangements were not always effective in ensuring learning, training compliance and some clinical processes were consistently embedded across the service.
People's experience of this service
We spoke with patients using the service, reviewed patient feedback and observed care and treatment. Patients were consistently positive about their experiences and told us staff treated them with kindness, dignity and respect. Patients said staff listened to their concerns, explained procedures and treatment clearly, and involved them in decisions about their care. Patients felt supported before and after treatment and told us staff responded promptly when they needed assistance. Patients with additional needs received personalised support and reasonable adjustments where required. Friends and Family Test results between June 2025 and May 2026 showed more than 95% of respondents felt involved in their care, received appropriate information and were treated with dignity.
