During a routine inspection

We spoke with four organisations who commissioned services with E-Zec Medical Transport Portsmouth. All those we spoke with said they were happy with the service provided. People said that staff were helpful and friendly

We looked at the crew transport information sheets used by the service and saw they contained enough information to assist the staff to care for patients safely. The forms included information about people's previous medical history, background information, details of their current needs and an assessment of the patient's safety if left unattended in the ambulance. The manager told us: "We receive good information from the people who book our service so that we can effectively meet peoples needs."

We looked at the staff rota and saw there was sufficient staff on duty to provide a reliable service. The manger told us, "we always make sure there is enough staff to use all the ambulances we need to provide for people".

We spoke with a person who was involved with booking transport for a local care home. They told us that the service was excellent and that E-Zec Medical Transport Portsmouth worked well with them to meet people's needs.

We also spoke with seven members of staff who told us that they were well supported by the organisation. They also said they were provided with the training needed to support people effectively.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with six people who had used the service and they said they were generally happy with the service provided. However, a common cause for dissatisfaction was that people had to be ready for their transport 90 minutes before their appointment. The provider told us that this was to allow for people to be picked up from different locations. This is within the contracted Key Performance Indicators (KPI;s) for this contract.

All of the people we spoke with said they felt safe and expressed satisfaction with the staff that supported them.

We spoke to a member of staff from the NHS Primary Care Trust who was involved in how the service operated for people. We were told that E-Zec Medical Transport Portsmouth worked closely with the NHS primary care trust to deliver an effective service to patients.

We spoke with two health care staff who were involved with booking transport for patients. One told us the service was excellent and that E-Zec Medical Transport Portsmouth worked well with them to meet patients needs. The other said that at times some patients had to wait a considerable time (over one hour) before transport was available to take them home from appointments and this could be frustrating for patients. However this was within the contracted KPI's for this contract.
