Our view of the service

We carried out this inspection on 22 April 2025. During this inspection we looked at the key questions of Safe and Well-led. The inspection was triggered by some concerns we had received around people’s care and treatment. Fairby Grange is a service which provides personal care and accommodation for up to 27 people. Some people had health conditions that required ongoing care, while others were living with dementia.

At our last inspection the provider was in breach of regulations in relation to good governance and risks to people. At this visit we found improvements had been made which included the introduction of regularly checking that people’s profiling mattresses were safe and set at the correct setting. New systems and processes had been introduced to strengthen the governance arrangements within the service. However, despite these improvements the provider had failed to identify they were not following the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in relation to the CCTV they had at the service. This meant there was a lack of evidence that this was the least restrictive option for ensuring people’s safety. The provider started to address this immediately after our visit.

Staff ensured people received the medicines they required, although the electronic medicines system they used was not robust or efficient. Again, the provider address this following our inspection.

However, we had no concerns that people were unsafe or receiving unsuitable care. Staff knew people, their needs and their preferences well. Potential risks to people had been identified and guidance was in place for staff. Staff knew how to recognise potential safeguarding concerns and could tell us how they would report these. Accidents and incidents were recorded, acted upon and lessons were learnt.

The provider had ensured there were sufficient staff on duty to meet people’s needs and staff felt supported, telling us they received appropriate training and supervision. Since our last inspection a new manager had started at the service who was in the process of registering with CQC.

People lived in an environment that was kept clean and was well maintained and the provider was consistently updating and refurbishing it.

People's experience of this service

People and their families said they were happy living at Fairby Grange. They told us how safe they felt and how well the staff knew and understood them. People said staff were always available to help when needed and they were pleased with the environment and how it was maintained. People described the staff as kind and caring, and relatives told us they felt staff were competent in their role.

People had the opportunity to participate in the running of the service through surveys and comments made were responded to. People were given the opportunity to access their local community through outings and support from staff, as well as manage their own medicines if they wished. This enabled people to retain some independence and control.
