This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Assessing needs

Score: 3

The provider made sure people’s care and support was effective by assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them. Before people started using the service their needs were assessed. We saw examples where the registered manager had completed pre-admission assessments. This helped to ensure the needs of prospective new residents could be met.

Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

Score: 3

The service planned and delivered people’s care and treatment with them, including what was important and mattered to them. As a residential care setting without nursing, people’s care and support was delivered in line with their assessed care needs. The registered manager and staff knew people well which meant any changes were responded to effectively and appropriately. Guidance and recommendations from professionals such as district nurses and speech language therapy were recorded, understood and followed by staff.

We looked at the mealtime experience. Most people told us they enjoyed the home cooked food and that there was plenty of choice. Comments included, “I like it here, the food is good” and “The food is lovely you get a choice and you get enough to eat."

How staff, teams and services work together

Score: 3

The provider worked well across teams and services to support people. They sought to ensure people only needed to tell their story once by sharing their assessment of needs when people moved between different services. In the event of person moving on from the home, the registered manager worked well with other professionals, people and their relatives to ensure the transition went as smoothly as possible, with relevant and up to date and information provided.

Supporting people to live healthier lives

Score: 3

The provider supported people to manage their health and wellbeing to maximise their independence, choice and control. People were supported to live healthier lives through regular access to primary care services such as GP, community nurses and chiropody. A community nurse commented, “I visit the home on a regular basis. Staff are friendly and approachable. Senior [Name] is very good with residents and very helpful."

Monitoring and improving outcomes

Score: 3

The service monitored people’s care and support to continuously improve it. The provider had invested in a new electronic care planning system since our last inspection. This was helping staff with routine monitoring of people’s needs across a range of areas such as eating and drinking and skin integrity. Whilst recoding of information by staff was of a good standard, they needed to ensure involvement of people was captured, and if people had not been involved in their care plan, the reasons why.

The service told people about their rights around consent and respected these when delivering care and support. People’s ability to consent was formally recorded with their care plans. As described in the Safeguarding section of this report, the MCA was understood and followed by staff.
