Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

Regulations met

The provider had systems to ensure that people who used the service received person-centred care and treatment, that was appropriate, met their needs and was reflective of their personal preferences. Preventive oral health care was encouraged.
We identified areas for improvement in maintaining current evidence-based practice, particularly in relation to selection criteria for taking X-rays and guidance issued by the British Society of Periodontology. Following the inspection, the provider submitted evidence demonstrating that action had been taken to address these areas to support alignment with current clinical guidance.
Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.
We reviewed a sample of patient care records and found improvements were needed to ensure record keeping was consistent with recognised guidance. Evidence submitted following the inspection confirmed this was being addressed.

We saw evidence the dentists justified, graded and reported on the radiographs they took.

Staff obtained patients’ consent for treatment in line with legislation and guidance and understood their responsibilities under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Staff described how they involved patients’ relatives or carers when appropriate and made sure they had enough time to explain treatment options clearly.

The practice had systems for the prescribing and dispensing of medicines in line with current guidance and undertook antimicrobial prescribing audits. However, improvements were needed to ensure patients prescribed antibiotics for certain clinical conditions received a timely clinical review to assess their response to treatment and determine whether any further intervention was required, in line with current guidance. Evidence provided after the inspection confirmed action had been taken to address this.
Patients were referred to primary and secondary care specialists for treatment the practice did not provide. This included referring patients with suspected cancer under the national faster diagnosis pathways.
Staff felt the practice supported them to develop and enabled them to take on responsibilities.
