Equity in access
Staff had carried out a disability access audit and had an action plan to continually improve access for patients.
Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to ensure the practice was accessible. The practice had access to large print or alternative formats of information and reading glasses to support patients with impaired vision. The practice was wheelchair accessible with a portable ramp and had a ground floor treatment room.
Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care.
The practice supported more vulnerable members of society. For example, the practice offered additional familiarisation visits for patients who were anxious or had a learning disability, helping them feel more comfortable with the dental environment before treatment commenced.
The practice had considered the needs of children attending the service. For example, there was a small child-friendly area in the waiting room, and a tooth fairy poem was displayed to help create a welcoming and reassuring environment for younger patients.
The practice displayed its opening hours and provided information on the internet.
The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.
The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open. The practice provided contact details for patients who required emergency dental treatment through the practice voicemail, which provided an emergency contact number. Patients were able to speak directly with a dentist, who would offer advice and arrange an appointment where necessary.
The practice also reserved emergency appointment slots each day to help ensure patients requiring urgent treatment could be seen promptly.
