Assessing needs

Score: 3

Comprehensive medical information was obtained during the consultation, this included visual evidence of weight and a BMI calculation. We saw evidence of patients who did not meet the criteria for treatment being signposted to other services, including their GP.
Staff had become aware of the potential for patients presenting with body dysmorphia and had planned further training in this area. Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental disorder characterised by the obsessive idea that some aspect of the person's body or appearance is severely flawed.

Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

The service planned and delivered patient’s care and treatment with them, including what was important and mattered to them. Systems were in place to ensure staff were up to date with evidence-based practice. We saw care records which demonstrated staff assessed needs and delivered care and treatment in line with relevant current legislation, standards and guidance, including NICE guidelines for the treatment of obesity.
Patients’ outcomes were recorded including weight loss and any side effects, this was audited and reviewed to ensure effective treatment was delivered.

How staff, teams and services work together

They had a comprehensive plan of audits and these were reviewed at clinical meetings.

The service told people about their rights around consent and respected these when delivering person-centred care and treatment.
People who expressed an interest in treatment, were given sufficient information about the treatment options available to reach a decision on whether to proceed.
We saw the clinic monitored the consent process appropriately. Staff understood the requirements of legislation and guidance when considering consent and decision making.
Patients were asked for consent to share details of their consultation and any medicines prescribed with their registered GP when they accessed services.
