Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 13 May 2026.

Alton Surgery is a GP practice and delivers services to approximately 2,721 people under a contract held with NHS England. According to the latest available data, the ethnic make-up of the service area is approximately 98% White, 0.8% Asian, 0.8% Mixed, 0.2% Black and 0.2% Other. Information published by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities shows deprivation within the service population group is in the 9th decile (9 of 10). The lower the decile, the more deprived the service population is relative to others.

This was a focused assessment. We undertook this assessment due to the length of time since our last assessment. We assessed 10 quality statements from across all 5 key questions. This assessment considered the demographics of the people using the service, the context the service was working within and how this impacted service delivery. Where relevant, further commentary is provided in the quality statements section of this report.

Staff maintained a clean environment and managed infection risks. However, oversight of landlord-led actions, staff immunisation records and some recruitment processes required strengthening. There were sufficient skilled staff to deliver care.

The service supported positive health outcomes and exceeded national targets for childhood immunisations and cancer screening uptake. People were treated with kindness and respect, and access to care was significantly better than national averages.

Leaders promoted equality and addressed barriers to access. The service had a clear vision, and governance systems supported accountability, although oversight of safety risks within the practice environment required further assurance. Leaders acknowledged this and following our assessment adopted processes to address this. Staff understood their individual roles and responsibilities. Leaders accounted for the actions, behaviours and performance of staff through clear and effective governance processes.

We found a breach of regulation in relation to safe care and treatment. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

People's experience of this service

As part of our assessment, we reviewed feedback from people who used the service to understand their views and experience of the service. This included receiving feedback through our online ‘Give Feedback on Care’ service and reviewing other feedback available to us. People were overwhelmingly positive about the quality of their care and treatment. They described how staff treated them with kindness and compassion and respected their privacy. This was mirrored in the results of recent surveys, including the 2025 National GP Patient Survey, which showed people were very satisfied. For example, 93% of respondents to the GP patient survey were positive about their overall experience of the GP practice. This was above the national average of 75%.

The Friends and Family test showed that patient feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with most responses rated “Very likely” to recommend the practice. Key strengths identified were caring and compassionate clinicians; a friendly and supportive staff team; good access and responsiveness; and good quality of care.

There was an active patient participation group (PPG) who represented the views of people using the service. A representative from the PPG was very positive about the support the practice gave them and happy with the service provided.
