How this check was done

Our judgement

The provider was meeting this standard.

Patients were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

User experience

We spoke with patients but their comments did not relate to this standard.

Other evidence

There were monthly staff meetings. We saw from the minutes of these meetings that there were open discussions about ways to improve the service provided to patients. Dentists had a regular peer review meeting. We saw minutes where dentists had compared various x-ray photographs of patients and discussed what could be learned from them.

There was a 12 week induction programme. We spoke with staff who said that the programme had been comprehensive and supportive.

All the clinical staff completed a scheme of continuous professional development. They attended various learning events and received points for each event attended.

There were regular one to one supervision meetings between the practice manager and the staff. We saw that these covered useful topics such as, in one case, the mentoring of new staff.

There was a system of annual appraisals. It was newly in place and none had been completed. However we saw that appointments between managers and staff for the appraisals had been made.

All mandatory training was up to date and we saw certificates of attendance. Staff were trained at the same time during training events at the practice. Where a member staff had missed an event we saw a note to the effect that, “(practice manager) has booked a place at … (another ADP practice)”.
