Both providers share equal responsibility for delivering services at the site. Care UK Care Services Limited registered on 21 October 2024 and this is the first assessment under their registration.

Assessments of people’s needs had been completed which included risks to people’s safety such as malnutrition, mobility and choking. Staff had clear guidance on how to support people safely which was regularly reviewed and updated. Where needed, staff had liaised with healthcare professionals for additional support, and a local GP visited the service weekly. Medicines were safely managed. Staff had training on administering medicines, and their competence was regularly checked. Staff carried out regular checks for quality on medicines which helped identify issues and improvements.

Systems were effective in involving people in their care and where appropriate staff also involved relatives. There were regular meetings for people and relatives where information was shared and concerns could be raised.

The service was clean and well maintained. Some aspects of the environment could be confusing for people with dementia. We shared this feedback with the registered manager and the provider.

Staff were recruited safely; however, we did find 1 recruitment check that required a further check. The provider used a dependency tool to calculate staffing numbers which was based on people’s needs. People, relatives and staff had mixed views on staffing. Some found there to be enough staff, however, others felt the service needed more staff. We shared feedback with the registered manager and provider. We found there were sufficient numbers of staff to support people safely. Staff had an induction and ongoing training and support. The provider had various resources and systems to support staff well-being.

Governance systems were effective and helped the registered manager and provider identify, assess and manage risks and quality. The registered manager was supported by the provider and there was a clear line management structure at the service. Staff knew and understood this. Staff told us they found the registered manager to be very approachable and listened to their concerns and ideas for improvements.

People's experience of this service

People said they were happy living at the service and had the care they needed. The service had supported people to maintain relationships with friends, family and spouses. People could have visitors when they wished with no restrictions. There were facilities and a small café area at the service for relatives to help themselves to refreshments. One relative said, “Relatives and family are made to feel welcome, and the café area makes it nice and easy to make drinks and have a bit of cake.”

There was an activities programme with planned events and activities for people to join in if they wished. Staff helped people maintain links with the local community and have trips out on the services’ minibus.

People had a personalised care plan which was reviewed monthly and gave staff guidance on all care and health needs. People’s rights were respected and staff helped people access support from health professionals when needed. A local GP visited the service weekly or more if needed. Staff monitored people’s health and wellbeing and took action if there were early signs of ill health.

People had their own en-suite room which they could personalise. People also had access to various communal areas and a secure garden. The service was clean, well maintained and smelt fresh.
