Our view of the service

Date of inspection 18 and 21 August. The service is a care home supporting people with a learning disability and autistic people. We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

People and their families had been involved in planning their care. Where people were assessed as lacking capacity to make choices best interest decisions had been taken consulting people who knew them well and professional who were involved in their support.

People had detailed support plans that enabled staff to support people safely and in a person centred way. Leaders had ensured a person were supported in a creative and inclusive way that enabled them to stay at their home despite experiencing significant changes in their support needs.

Leaders had ensured the service worked to Stopping Over Medication of People with a Learning Disability and Autistic People (STOMP) principles ensuring people were taking appropriate medicines in a timely way.

Leaders had a clear vision and culture based on person centred support and ensured these values were embedded into practice.

Some areas of the home were not in good order and were not always appropriate for the people living there. There was a planned schedule of improvement that the provider had just started to address these issues.

People's experience of this service

Most people did not communicate using speech, but staff knew people well and could tell inspectors how people communicated their needs and choices. Inspectors observed interactions between people and staff, and we saw people were engaged with in a positive way, giving them choices and listening to their communication methods to see what they wanted. Families felt people were very well supported. One family member stated, “I am so happy with everything they do; [person] is very happy.” Another said, “I appreciate the way they look after [person]” and another said “they give me huge confidence” that people are supported safely.
