Our view of the service

Cygnet Paddocks opened in July 2024. Cygnet Paddocks is a 28-bed specialist neuropsychiatric rehabilitation hospital for male patients. There are 3 wards. Sorrel ward is a 12-bed ward for patients with neuropsychiatric injuries. Bay ward is a 10-bed ward for patients with neuropsychiatric injuries and additional physical health needs. Roan ward has 6 self-contained apartments. The service provided care and treatment for patients with acquired or traumatic brain injuries, including stroke. The service also offers continuing care for people who have progressive neurological conditions, such as Huntington’s disease. There was a total of 19 patients at the hospital.

This was our first assessment of the service, which was not previously rated. We assessed the service group (ASG) ‘’services for people with acquired brain injury" and included all the Quality Statements across all 5 Key Questions.

We reviewed 5 client care and treatment records. We carried out a tour of the environment. We spoke to thirteen members of staff including the registered manager.

The service was registered on 12 August 2024; this is the first assessment of the service.

People's experience of this service

We spoke to 4 patients as part of our assessment. Feedback from patients was positive; they described staff as supportive and kind and said that they felt they could speak openly with staff and formed trusted relationships. Patients were positive about their involvement in care and treatment and could give their views and opinions.

Patients we spoke with liked the staff and had confidence in them. We observed that patients were relaxed and at ease when moving between their private room and communal areas and they told us they felt safe. Patients we spoke with enjoyed accessing the local community and nearby town centre and visits to the wider Cheshire and Merseyside communities. Patients told us they could pursue interests and hobbies, enjoyed activities and therapies they had access to. The atmosphere in the service was calm and relaxed.

Relatives were satisfied with the care support and treatment provided. They told us they were involved in their family members transfer to the service, included and involved in decision making and communication was good. Relatives said their views and opinions were taken into consideration when it came to patient’s care and treatment.

The 2 relatives we spoke to told us the service offered accessible online meetings and provided reports on how their family members care and treatment was progressing, and the service was described as ‘open’ in engaging with relatives. Therapies were described as supporting patients to reduce distressed behaviours, helping patients to learn cooking skills, providing a safe environment in which to live. Relatives feedback described staff as ‘providing meaningful, enjoyable activities’ and ‘skilled excellent staff, who were attentive to patient’s needs and resolved concerns quickly and efficiently’.

During the inspection, we observed that staff were knowledgeable about patients and had a calm, compassionate, respectful approach toward them.
